By 1968, however, a much more systematic agenda began to emerge. A series of occasional papers in cultural studies, and, later, working papers in cultural studies (which were subsequently published as books by Hutchinson, giving them a much wider circulation), and stencilled occasional papers in cultural studies, revealed not only the broad range of thematic concerns but also the attempt to provide a theoretical core to the work of the Centre. The problem was Marx. As Stuart Hall wrote much later: the encounter between British cultural studies and Marxism has first to be understood as the engagement with a problem—not a theory, not even a problematic.

It centred on two authors (Pascal and Racine) whose work operated on a tension between their social status and the movements to which they were affiliated. Both authors (in particular Pascal) were concerned with making sense of contradictory social and CULTURAL STUDIES AND BEYOND 37 epistemological realities.
