Wanting the natives to develop a friendly attitude toward the Spaniards, “ because more could be gained that way than by force,” Columbus gave red caps to some and beads to others. In turn, the natives gave all they had: parrots, balls of cotton thread, spears, and a dry leaf they held in great esteem (tobacco). Columbus insisted his men take nothing from the people without giving something in return. At least in the beginning, Columbus was thinking about trading, not raiding. It was shortly after, however, that the Admiral revealed another side, one that did not bode well for the people he called Indians, in the belief that he had landed on one of the numerous islands east of India.
To that end, in January 1486, Columbus arrived at Córdoba, seeking an audience with Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Unfortunately, the two monarchs had left for Madrid. They were not expected back in Córdoba until late April. Columbus had to be patient. It was at this time, while waiting to see the queen and king, when Columbus met a young woman named Beatriz Enríquez de Harana. Beatriz, at the time only 20 or 21 years old, became Columbus’s mistress. She eventually gave birth to their son, Ferdinand, on August 15, 1488, out of wedlock.
Then, on October 12, at 2 AM, the cry went out, “Terra! ” (Land! ). At daybreak, the 90 men of the Enterprise of the Indies strained to behold an island six miles away. Island Hopping in Paradise There were people on this island. And as far as Columbus and his men could see, they were all naked. Upon landing, Columbus, along with officers and a few crew members, took possession of the island for the sovereigns of Spain. The Admiral was richly attired in scarlet, befitting a viceroy. He fell to his knees, kissed the ground, and thanked God for his good fortune.
