I had few friends and found the work boring. So I just about stopped going, missing 72 days of classes during the school year. Earlier someone told me that if I joined the track team I could get out of some classes and detentions — which was the way they punished us when we played hooky. So I decided to run track and won my first race against the Kensington team. Then I went on to compete in the Vancouver Area School District Games, which involved 52 schools. I entered the 440, 880 and mile senior women's races.
In grade six my marks improved for the first time. I was a straight "A" student that year and the next. I also became good friends with a Jewish classmate named Maria von Strassen. Once I even went to synagogue with her. But I decided I didn't want to become Jewish — or any other religion for that matter. Maria, however, was a very nice girl, and very quiet. Everyone used to pick on her because of her being Jewish, quiet and a good student... I guess. Anyway, I often walked to school with her even though the other girls didn't want anyone to play with or talk to her.
Like in the evenings about five or six o'clock at the house when 57 everyone just sat around bored listening to "Mama" Ramirez talk. She'd just yak away like the older people in other families who didn't work, while the others sat dull and almost asleep. Mexican families seemed to form little cliques; they went around more as family circles than as groups of friends. They were all cousins, aunts and uncles, related in some way or another. This was kind of strange to me because I never hung around with my cousins even though they lived close.
