It wasn’t long before we started hearing that one-handed thieves were walking shame-faced on the streets of Khartoum, their hand having been removed as punishment for their crime. A money trader there was hanged for having non-Sudanese bills in his pocket. Entrepreneurial women were whipped for selling alcohol. Opposition leaders were jailed.
