Write your résumé: create a résumé and cover letter for each position. 3. Apply for jobs: choose which organizations interest you and apply for jobs. 4. What is good about their job? What would they change? Develop an elevator speech on what anthropologists are and what they do. People will ask you this question constantly when you are looking for a job, after you get one, and in your work itself. Be prepared to deliver it over and over, sometimes in real elevators on the way to lunch. Try really hard to clean the anthropological (or any other) jargon out of your working vocabulary. When I first entered the workplace, I used the emic/etic distinction like they were real words in the English language.

This is one of the many things that are getting better. People do have a more sophisticated idea of who we are. But none of that matters if you are interviewing a person who is one of the other kind. Also the interviewer has your résumé. They already know you’re an anthropologist. In fact, they may be interviewing you in spite of that fact. So do ethnography in job interviews.
